I went to the theater late yesterday afternoon, paid my hard earned monies for a matinee ticket, bought some popcorn and a soda, and plopped my fat ass down in a seat to watch this:
And you know what? I liked it. Pretty fun comic book movie. Obviously, I have a few complaints — mainly surrounding the film and not so much with it.
1) FFS studio execs: STOP MICROMANAGING THESE FILMS ALL FOR FEAR OF THE ALL MIGHTY DOLLAR!!!! You already screwed up the theatrical release of BvS (seriously folks: the 30 minutes added back in for the Ultimate Edition makes the film soooo much better). Stop panicking and trying to control it all. You know the moment you insisted on reshoots for Suicide Squad, doomed all the buzz and put you on the backfoot with critics (more on critcs later). Anyone with any sense can see in the 2nd half of the film that was disjointed from the first. Oh, and next time you want to do a test screening of two versions of your film, don’t use “Northern California” [read: Silicon Valley] for your test audience. How can you expect any of them to be a good representation of multiple taste in film for the rest of the U.S. when a 530 sq. ft. condo starts around $600,000.00 in the Bay Area?
2) Any film critic that gave this movie less than 2 stars on a 4 star scale, or 2.5 on a 5 star scale: I’ve lost all respect for you. GTFO. It’s a comic book movie with bad guys as the heroes. Get over it. Even if you aren’t familiar with the source material, it still is a work of fiction. It makes no sense for you to base your opinions against this film BECAUSE IT REMINDS YOU OF SOMETHING IN REAL LIFE. Not only is that unfair, it’s unprofessional. No wonder fanboys want to burn down Rotten Tomato.
3) The excessive sexualization of Harley Quinn wasn’t necessary — not in a PG-13 movie at least. She’s sexy standing still. No one needs multiple close ups of her bending over...if you do, well...we are on the internet. Now there is one early flashback scene with her and the Joker are playing up their deep attraction for each other which pays off down the road IMO. But the rest was overkill — probably studio meddling.
4) Anyone bitching about Jared Leto’s Joker: STOP. In your mind’s eye, you wanted him to be as good like Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill, or obviously Heath Ledger, right? If that’s the case, you expected an impersonation. That’s not how acting works. He was fine. And he will fit well within this DCEU.
5) Here’s my cat ready to go to Trader Joe’s.
goodnight, Oppo.

pretty much my stance. It was an entertaining movie. There was too much hype from the first previews on and it made for an unattainable goal. I thought the whole Enchantress belly dancing stripper villain was a bit silly but NBD. I liked Will Smith’s Deadshot and think he could pull off a solo anti hero movie.
My only gripe with Leto’s take on the Joker was the aesthetic which I walked in with. I feel the teeth look ridiculous and the fine script tattoos (even though in the film you see less of them than in the promo photos) didn’t go with the personality. Sloppy scratch tattoos would have been more appropriate IMO, like jailhouse tattoos. The far too publicized antics of his method acting were a turn off but whatever. I went in expecting to hate this Joker and be distracted by it, but left without any opinion other than my dislike for the aesthetic in tact.
Ignore the reviews, watch it for entertainment and it’s fine. Any notions otherwise and you’ll be overthinking it.

It was an enjoyable movie, and you forgot to mention how Will Smith did a good job. I think Jared Leto did a good job as this Joker. This is what I show people when they talk about the jokers from different eras, and why this one represents something different.

A syringe of speed in one arm and a syringe of horse tranquilizers in the other.
